Critiquing the Ideas of Others
Our exercise on Wednesday was to practice critically engaging other people's positions regarding their worldviews, ethics, and views of science. This practice is not only essential to understanding our own positions more fully, but knowing how to dialogue with others.
In class, we will continue to work on critiquing others ideas by engaging two statements by two different Christian organizations. Simply because two people, or in this case organizations, embrace the broad frameworks of a Christian worldview does not entail that they will understand the important details of that worldview, ethical values, or calls to action in the same way. This is obviously the case in a host of other ethical and political issues within Christianity, and environmental issues are no different.
For class, carefully and critically read through the two statements provided:
- "An Evangelical Declaration on the Care of Creation"
- "The Cornwall Declaration on Environmental Stewardship"
Bring these two statements to class and be prepared to discuss:
- What are the important differences between the two statements?
- Which elements of each statement would you personally embrace, and which would you criticize.
Be prepared to defend your answers.
Grading
You will be graded on your participation in the discussion.
