MA: Describing Problems

In this MA, we will use Booth et al.'s methodology to move from questions to describing problems that could possibly be used for your next paper. In this assignment, we want you to practice thinking in terms of Booth et al.'s categories, because they provide a way to define research problems.

For each of the 8-10 questions for each of your two topics from the "A Broad Sense" assignment, answer the following questions (see Booth, Ch. 4 for more information):

  1. What is the significance of the question?
  2. Does this significance suggest a practical or conceptual problem?
  3. If it is a practical problem, what is the condition(s) and cost(s) of the problem? If it is conceptual, what is the condition(s) and consequence(s) of the problem?
