Writing
1) Read Chapter 1 of Benson and the Readings in the back of Benson corresponding to this chapter (those Readings are mentioned in the chapter text and margin notes; for Chapter 1, for instance, there are two Readings and they are listed on p. 27). In particular, read the essay by Brian Norton, "The Cultural Approach to Conservation Biology," which is Reading 2 (and starts on p. 143).
2) Write TWO paragraphs, each of which summarizes each of the two steps in Norton's argument that begins on p. 146c (starting with the paragraph that begins with "In the remainder of this chapter" and continuing to the end).
In writing your paragraphs, use the guide to writing paragraphs, to write paragraphs that are
- Unifed around a central topic sentence
- Coherent in the development of the topic sentence,
- Appropriate in length and grammar.
Your assignment will be evaluated according to the clarity of topic sentences, unity and coherence of the paragraph, and correct understanding of Norton's argument.
Meeting
During this first week, you will meet with Prof. Lin about your essay and to talk to him about anything you'd like to. This meeting will count for part of your grade for this assignment.
