Synthesis Speech

Assignment

Write a speech synthesizing the worldview, ethical theories, and scientific aspects of an/your environmental topic.

You are to make some sort of argument in your synthesis regarding the topic. In other words, your speech should have a thesis. The thesis could be a call to action, a reason for hope or pessimism, a direction for future inquiry/deliberation, a statement of commitment. A speech that just outlines the scientific findings regarding the topic, for instance, does not meet the requirements. A speech that just summarizes the ethical piece is also lacking. The point is to integrate all these pieces into a coherent speech. Remember, coherence means that the speech will hold together as a whole; it does not mean you will have time for a full argument.

Remember there are three kinds of rhetoric: logos, pathos, and ethos. Your speech should evidence appropriate use of all three as well as quality structure, argument, content, prose, and delivery.

Format

The speech will be five-minutes long. There may be a one-minute question/answer session following. You do not need to memorize your speech but may deliver it with the use of notes/manuscript. Please turn in a typewritten draft of your speech. The speech is due Mon. Apr 30. Speaking order will be determined by lot.
