A number of sub-grid sea-ice properties remain unparameterized in general circulation models, due both to a lack of understanding of the physical processes involved as well as high computational expense. One approach to bridge such a gap is to use a stochastic parameterization to represent such unresolved processes. This approach was developed initially for representation of sub-grid variability in convection (Lin and Neelin 2000). In current work, we are developing a stochastic parameterization for sea-ice leads, in order to investigate how inclusion of such phenomena may impact the large-scale Arctic atmosphere.
